I ran away from home to walk across Spain with my fifteen-year-old son. I quit my job of nearly twenty years in 2013 to spend thirty-five life-changing days on the Camino de Santiago.
Over a plate of fly-infested paella, I bonded with Rosemary, a single mom from England. She was the first to suggest there are a lot of ways to mother besides the unhappy road I was on.
Six months after we finished our Camino, I packed my bags and moved to Spain for two years. I learned the valuable lesson that while most mothers worry about failing our children, we more often risk failing ourselves.
I call Madrid home now and my young adult children are living their own best lives in the Pacific Northwest. My Spanish adventure memoir called Motherfail is due out in 2025.
I hope you’ll join me on My Slow Road, where I publish original photos and write about creativity, travel, writing, and my next Camino dream to take a long walk on the Via Francigena.
